This lecture by art historian Catherine Wallace focuses on women artists active in Falmouth and South Cornwall from the 17th century to 1940, either painting as a hobby or pursuing it professionally. These artists were trailblazers since the idea of being a full-time professional artist was generally deemed unsuitable for women until the 20th century.

Notable artists in this group include Anne Killigrew, Anna Maria Fox, Rachel Fox, Sophie Anderson, Ellen Genn, Maria Tuke Sainsbury, Georgina Martha de L’Aubiniere, Winifred Freeman, and Marjorie Fischer Williams, among others.

Catherine Wallace is a freelance art historian, writer and lecturer specialising in British and European 19th and 20th century art with a focus on artists who were based in Cornwall, England. Wallace also has an in depth knowledge of commercial contemporary art and artists from Cornwall. Catherine Wallace has over 30 years experience as a curator and writer on art. This informs the lectures and guided tours she now offers online and live in Cornwall.
